The FTSE was flat in afternoon trade on Tuesday as investors took in the implications of the Brussels terror attacks. At 1450 GMT the index of leading shares was up 0.01% to 6,184.27 points.

Randgold led the risers as investors sought a safe haven in a time of yet more uncertainty. The stock rose 2.8%. Fresnillo was also in favour with a 2.4% jump. Both stocks were on the slide last week as riskier stocks became the choice of the day.

Travel and airline shares fell in the wake of the atrocity in Belgium

TUI, IAG, Intercontinental Hotels and Carnival all slid on the news.

Capita fell nearly 3% after a broker note raised concerns about the outlook for the company.
