FTSE 100 movers: HSBC lower on tax scandal fines, LSE boosted by higher price target
Updated : 15:13
HSBC was among the fallers after reporting a 17% drop in pre-tax annual profit to $18.68bn, as the lender was hit by fines for its involvement in the foreign exchange rigging scandal. Chief executive Stuart Gulliver said 2014 was a "challenging year in which we continued to work hard to improve business performance while managing the impact of a higher operating cost base".
Chilean copper miner Antofagasta declined despite guiding to lower-than-expected cash costs in 2015 on the back of a weaker Chilean peso and lower oil prices.
The wider mining sector was also trading lower, including Fresnillo, Anglo American and BHP Billiton, along with oil group Tullow Oil.
Rio Tinto was trading lower on a more cautious view from UBS, citing a “more balanced” risk-reward equilibrium, after a 23% surge in the share from the trough in mid-December. The stock has outperformed the iron ore price in that time by 32% and Glencore by 22%.
London Stock Exchange surged as analysts at Numis Securities lifted their target price by 11% to reflect the integration of the Russell Index business which was acquired through the Frank Russell takeover last year.
The broker raised its target for the shares from 2,074p to 2,300p. It said: “We continue to favour LSEGs strong market position, favourable growth drivers and diversified revenue base. Consequently, we believe the LSEG is well positioned for this year and beyond.”
