London’s FTSE 100 was up 0.2% at 7,611.05 in afternoon trade on Wednesday

Heavily-weighted miners were on the rise, with Antofagasta, Anglo American, Glencore and Rio Tinto all up.

Ladbrokes owner Entain was under the cosh after it raised gross proceeds of around £600m in a discounted placing and retail offer, part of which will be used to fund the acquisition of Polish sports bettering operator STS Holdings, and the remainder to fund near-term acquisitions.

The company announced after the close on Tuesday that it had agreed to buy STS for around £750m.

Entain placed a total of just under 48.3m shares at a price of 1,230p, which is a 6.9% discount to the closing share price on Tuesday.

BT Group was also under the cosh after Vodafone agreed to merge its telecoms business with CK Hutchison’s Three UK mobile network in a deal that will create the country’s biggest mobile operator.
