FTSE 100 movers: Miners shine; leisure shares lose lustre

Miners took the FTSE 100 blue chip index as metals and oil prices headed north.

Anglo American led the way with a rise of 4% in afternoon trade. Glencore, Fresnillo, BHP Billiton, Antofagasta, Shell and Randgold.

Shell shares gained on after RBC Capital Markets lifted its target price on the stock to 2,000p from 1,9000 and reiterated an ‘outperform’ rating.

The oil producer on Tuesday announced plans for more asset sales and cost-cutting over the next few years amid lower oil prices.

Shell will exit oil and gas operations in up to 10 countries and sell 10% of its production as part of a $30bn asset sale plan by 2018. The group lowered its planned 2016 capital expenditure (capex) to $29bn, with exploration set at $2.5bn, in a third cut from an initial $35bn.

Dearer fule cost fears hit the leisure sector, the Guardian reported with Intercontinental, TUI and easJet all lower as a result.

A car bomb attack on a police station in Midyat, in the Mardin province of southeast Turkey, has killed at least three people and injured 20 more. It is the fifth major attack in Turkey this year.

This latest strike, near Turkey's border with Syrian and reported on by Aljazeera, came just a day after another car bomb hit a police vehicle in morning rush-hour Istanbul, leaving 11 dead.
