FTSE 100 movers: Mining stocks slide but housebuilders gain

London’s FTSE 100 index was down 1.2% to 6,091.00 at 1437 BST, after data indicated a slowdown in UK economic growth in the first quarter.

Heavily-weighted miners were the worst performers, with Glencore, Anglo American, Rio Tinto and Antofagasta all firmly in the red.

“Some heavy declines in industrial metal and oil prices over the past three days is taking its toll on the UK-listed miningcompanies, with basic resources the worst performing sector on the FTSE 100,” said Jasper Lawler, market analyst at CMC Markets.

Housebuilders were having a good day after a poll by OBR showed 51% of Britons planned on voting to remain in the EU at the 23 June referendum. Berkeley Group Holdings, Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey were among the biggest risers.

Payments firm Worldpay was on the front foot again on Tuesday, with Accendo Markets’ Mike van Dulken citing a revival of interest into April/Q2.

“This follows a tough March during which investors sent shares back near to February lows,” he said.

“The shares finding support around their 274p 200-day moving average, keeping them above their October IPO price of 250p, bodes well in the short-term. The only hurdle that remains is that nasty 2016 trend of falling highs resistance around 290p.”

London Stock Exchange edged higher after reports Intercontinental Exchange has secured funding from a trio of banks in preparation for a £10bn takeover bid.

According to Sky News, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange has reached agreement with Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo and Japan’s Mitsubishi UFJ to provide part of the debt needed to finance an offer for the LSE.

It was also understood that other lenders were expected to be added to the syndicate in the coming weeks.
