London’s FTSE 100 was down 1.2% at 7,180.48 in afternoon trade on Wednesday amid growing trade war concerns.

NMC Health was the worst performer on the index a day after it rallied on the back of upgraded guidance. On Tuesday, the company lifted its underlying revenue and earnings guidance for this year to reflect the impact of a healthcare joint venture with Saudi Arabia’s state-run pension fund and consolidation of its earlier acquisition of Boston IVF.

The shares were also hit by a downgrade at Citi.

Tesco lost ground as the latest data from Kantar showed that its market share fell to 27.3% from 27.7% in the 12 weeks to 19 May. Ocado also retreated even as the Kantar data revealed that its market share ticked up to 1.3% from 1.2%, while sales pushed up 6.4%.

British American Tobacco was under pressure again a day after Nielsen data showed that US cigarettes sales volumes fell 11.2% in the four-week period ended 18 May. Total sales fell 6.9% to $59.27bn.

Flutter Entertainment - formerly known as Paddy Power Betfair - was in the red after its name change.
