Plastics group Victrex beat forecasts with a 9% increase in annual profits as the company noted continued momentum across its markets and gave a positive outlook for next year. The company, focused on high-performance polymer solutions, also announced that it would be returning £43m to shareholders as part of a special dividend, in addition to a 5% increase in the full-year payout.

Credit Suisse drove shares in Berendsen higher after upping its rating to 'outperform' from 'neutral'.

Soco International was also higher on the news its long standing view of the size and production potential of the TGT field offshore Vietnam had been confirmed by the now completed evaluation by ERC Equipoise. The results indicated that the currently drilled fault blocks were likely to deliver 818m barrels of oil (boe). Including the H5N and H5S fault blocks, which are due to be drilled in the first quarter of 2015, this would likely rise to 949m boe.

The downside was dragged by oil stocks following the recent plunge in the price of Brent. Enquest, Afren, Nostrum, Ophir and Premier Oil were also sharply lower.

Moneysupermarket.com dropped into the red after Westhouse Securities cut its rating on the stock to 'neutral' from 'add'.
