London’s FTSE 250 was up 0.6% at 17,492.52 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.

Trainline shares surged to the top of the index after the company said it has appointed Photobox chief executive Jody Ford to the newly-created role of chief operating officer, with effect from 21 September.

Broker Peel Hunt said Ford’s four years as CEO at Photobox alongside his ten years at eBay, where he most recently led the growth function, "should be invaluable at this innovative, data-led business".

Defence company Babcock was also trading higher after an upgrade to ‘overweight’ at Barclays.

Capital & Counties was weaker after it said the value of its Covent Garden estate had fallen by 17% as the coronavirus pandemic took its toll on the company’s tenants, many of whom were forced to close their doors in March.

As at the end of June, the estate had a total value of £2.2bn, down from £2.6bn at the end of December 2019. Capco said that "substantially all" of the valuation movement relates to the retail, leisure and food & beverage portfolio, which represents 75% of the total property value.
