After over 100 years of blood, sweat and tears, the Chicago Cubs finally found the holy grail on Wednesday as they sealed a victory over the Cleveland Indians in baseball's World Series.

The Cubs won the series after coming back from a 3-1 deficit after the first four games, and clinched the win in Cleveland on a scoreline of 8-7.

Thousands of fans toasted the victory in the aftermath of the ground ball which handed them the title, putting to end the 108-year wait which was caused by an curse set on the team in 1945 by a local bar owner.

Wild celebrations ensued on the streets of the US city, as massive crowds gathered outside the Cubs' iconic Wrigley Field stadium.

The Cleveland team which ended up on the wrong side of the series have had a drought of their own, having not claimed world baseball's biggest prize since 1948.

In a game which faced interruptions due to adverse weather conditions, the hero for the Cubs was Ben Zobrist, who put his team into a lead late on in the contest that the Indians could not salvage.

It was a game befitting of its status as an iconic moment for the Chicago team, as it finished well after midnight in a dramtic encounter which took place over 10 innings.

Kobrist had won the World Series just a year ago with the Kansas City Royals, before moving to the Cubs this year. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the series.
