An Ecuadorian football star has been involved in a bizarre incident in his home country, as he appeared to feign an injury while playing an international match in order to escape a police arrest.

Enner Valencia, who currently plays his football at Merseyside club Everton having been loaned out from West Ham, reportedly owes his ex-wife $17,000 in alimony and is being sought by police in Ecuador.

His international teammates allegedly had to intervene to smuggle him from the team bus before the game.

The farce then escalated in the 82nd minute of the game with Chile, which Ecuador were winning 3-0, as Valencia complained of feeling unwell and was escorted from the pitch on a buggy.

As he left the stadium, he was pursued on the running track by a horde of police officers.

The current whereabouts of the Everton star are unknown.
