Ride-hailing app operator Uber has managed to secure a 15-month licence to work in London after it impressed the judge with big improvements to its practices, but remains 'on probation' with a strict set of conditions to obey.

Uber will be able to continue operating in the UK capital after Westminster Magistrates’ Court decided to grant the firm a probationary licence.

The ride-hailing company was close to being banned from working in London after Transport for London ruled last September that it was not “fit and proper” to hold a licence.

After months of improvements to Uber's practices, TfL said recently it no longer holds concerns about public safety and security.

In order to keep its licence, Uber must now inform the police of criminal allegations, face regular independent audits and not employ anyone who has helped evade law enforcement.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I fully supported Transport for London’s decision not to renew Uber’s operating licence last September – I believe everyone must play by the same rules, no matter how big or powerful they are.

“After years of operating poorly in London, Uber has now accepted that TfL’s action in refusing to renew their licence was totally justified. Today our stance has been vindicated by the court.

“Uber has been put on probation – their 15 month licence has a clear set of conditions that TfL will thoroughly monitor and enforce.”
