Online researching site SimilarWeb has released a survey indicating what is the most popular application used in each country for Android users. Unsurprisingly, Whatsapp claimed the most countries with 109 citing the app as their favourite, a total of 55.6% of the world.

Russia, Mexico, United Kingdom and Spain, and many other countries spanning every continent chose the popular programme as the best way to keep in touch with friends.

49 countries chose Facebook Messenger as their favourite, including the USA, Canada and Australia, while Viber was the only other network to claim more than 10 countries. Viber has gained increased popularity throughout Eastern Europe in countries such as Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.

Interestingly, Indonesia's most popular app is one that has long since been forgotten in most of the Western world: BBM. The Blackberry seems to have become almost obsolete in many countries but its chat system takes first place in the Asian country.

The survey used data from 187 countries, and in the majority of cases the most popular messaging app was also the most popular app in general terms.
