As the race to become the next president of the United States prepares to enter its final few hours, Donald Trump has once again reiterated his belief that the system is "rigged" against him, following the news that Hillary Clinton was cleared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The former secretary of state was cleared of any wrongdoing after a second probe from the FBI's James Comey into her private email server while in office.

Ahead of the vote on Tuesday, the two candidates struck familiarly distinctive tones on Sunday as they bid to cross the finish line in one of the most bitter and divisive election campaigns in history.

Trump projected dark forecasts of an already-rigged political system to crowds in long-considered solid Democratic states.

"Hillary Clinton is guilty. She knows it, the FBI knows it, the people know," he said at a rally in Detroit. "And now it's up to the American people to deliver justice at the ballot box on November 8th."

The Republican has maintained his stance that Tuesday's election will be fixed against him, and not given any guarantees that he will accept the result if defeated by his opponent.

During visits to Philadelphia and New Hampshire on Sunday, Clinton came out defiantly, without making a hard reference to the FBI action.

She referred to herself as the candidate that represented "healing and reconciliation", perhaps looking towards how to deal with such a divided nation in the event of a victory for her campaign.

"This election is a moment of reckoning," she said on Sunday night. "It is a choice between division and unity, between strong, steady leadership and a loose cannon who could put everything at risk."

Financial markets responded to the news of Clinton being let off the hook over the weekend, as stock markets, the dollar and industrial commodity prices were boosted.
