UK bookies reckon 35 wagers a minute will placed by night-owl Britons staying up to see the US election unfold, with one punter having already stumped up with £100,000 for a Hilary Clinton win.

The US goes to the ballot box on 8 November to decide what has been an acrimonious, no-holds-barred contest between Democrat-candidate Clinton and Republican-candidate Donald Trump.

"As we enter the final few hours in the race to the White House more wagers will have been placed on the US Presidency than the Euro 2016 final, the EU Referendum or The Derby," said Ladbrokes.

It said that, in terms of betting magnitude, this left the Clinton-Trump contest as second fiddle to the Grand National horse race.

"The bookies anticipate 35 bets per minute will be placed as Brits stay up into the early hours awaiting the final result," Ladbrokes said in a statement.

Latest figures from Ladbrokes put odds for a Clinton win at 2/9 and those for a Trump victory at 10/3.

One punter has already stumped up with a £100,000 wager on Clinton at odds of 1/4, which would equate to £125,000 returns if successful.

In other wagers, £200 had been placed on Trump at 150/1, promising a £30,200 return. Another better placed £25,000 on distinctive-barnet Trump at 2/1, promising a £75,000 return.

"Following the news that the FBI have concluded their latest review into Clinton's emails, punters have started to part ways with their cash on the Democratic candidate and forced her price into 2/9, leaving Trump on the move out to 10/3," Ladbrokes said.

"Clinton's winning vote share is still fancied by the firm at 11/10 to reach a maximum of 5%, but for those who think she will increase on that can take the 11/4 on offer for 5-10%.

"And finally, in recent days after heavy support, the betting has now moved in favour of the Democrats usurping the Republicans in key swing states Florida (2/5) and North Carolina (8/11)."
