FirstEnergy is a registered public utility holding company. Its seven electric utility operating subsidiaries make up America’s fifth largest investor-owned electric system, serving 4.4m customers across Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The company also provides natural gas services to around 150,000 customers in the Midwest and is also involved in the exploration and production of oil and natural gas. For the fiscal year 2003, the company generated revenues of more than $12bn and boasted assets of approximately $33bn.
