German CPI posts surprise fall in January
German inflation has unexpectedly fallen to 2.3% this month, according to official flash estimates published on Friday.
Economists were expecting no change to the figure. The Federal statistics office said prices fell 0.2% month on month.
The core inflation rate - which excludes volatile items such as food and energy - provisionally printed at 2.9%. Final results will be published on February 13.
