Eurozone construction growth slows to just 0.2%

Construction activity across the eurozone edged higher in January, with growth slowing for the second straight month, according to data out on Thursday from Eurostat.

Total construction output increased by just 0.2% over the first month of the year, compared with a 0.4% gain in December and 1.0% growth in November.

Building construction increased 0.9% in January after falling 0.2% the month before, while civil engineering output slumped 1.0% after growing 0.1% previously, and specialised construction activities contracted 0.1% after growing 0.4% the previous month.

The highest monthly increases in output were observed in Italy (+5.9%), Slovenia (+2.4%) and Slovakia (+1.6%), while the biggest contractions were seen in Portugal (-4.1%) and France (-3.9%).

In year-on-year terms, eurozone construction was unchanged from January 2024 after growing a revised 0.8% increase in December and 0.5% growth in November.
