Energy-based holding company, PG&E Corporation, is the parent company of Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and National Energy & Gas Transmission (NEGT). PG&E, the San Francisco-based utility, serves 13m people throughout a 70,000-square-mile service area in Northern and Central California. NEGT engages in electricity generation and natural gas transportation in the United States through its subsidiaries. In July 2003, it filed voluntary petition for relief under the provisions of Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code. On 12 April 2004, PG&E emerged from Chapter 11, having been unable to pay the bills that accumulated during Californias electricity crisis that began in mid-2000.
