The AIM-traded firm said that as a result, Robert Legget would resume his role as senior independent director.
It said Winks has held a number of senior management roles, including as managing director and chief executive officer of “a variety” of both private and public businesses.
More recently, he had been focused on business change projects, the board said.
Winks is currently chairman of Virtua Group, a non-executive director at Rainham Industrial Services, and executive chairman and CEO at John Charcol Group.
He previously held key management and board roles at companies including Claimar Care, Eleco, PCFG, Connect Group, Escher Group and Inspecs Holdings.
Sureserve said Winks is a fellow and previous director of the Institute for Turnaround.
He would be a member of the group's audit, nomination and remuneration committees, with the company adding that the formal process to appoint a new chief executive was continuing.
“Nick brings with him considerable commercial and leadership experience as we embark on the start of a new stage of the group's development, with the objective of delivering organic and inorganic growth,” said senior independent director Robert Legget.
Nick Winks said he was “delighted and honoured” to be chosen to be chairman of Sureserve.
“After a short acclimatisation I shall prioritise the search for a chief executive to lead the management in their efforts to drive growth and execute the group's buy-and-build strategy.”
