The AIM-traded surveillance technology firm said Butler had more than 30 years of commercial experience in well-known high technology businesses.
"I am delighted to announce Michael's appointment as a non-executive director of the company and to welcome him to the board," said Synectics chairman David Coughlan.
"He has an impressive industry and business background, including international experience, with the combination of skills necessary to strengthen the company and we look forward to working closely with him," he added.
Synectics said he began his career in 1983 at 3M, before he left to join British Telecom in 1988, where he became an account director.
Following that, Butler joined MCI WorldCom and was appointed managing director of its UK operations in 1998. From May 2000 to April 2009, he served as the managing director, then president and chief operating officer and an executive board director of FTSE 100 company Inmarsat.
In September 2010, Butler was appointed to the board of Addvalue Technologies as an independent director, and in 2012 he became an independent director of Thuraya Telecommunications. He was also currently non-executive chairman of Broadband Satellite Services.
