Thursday preview: US CPI, Barclays in the spotlight

The focus for financial markets will be on US consumer price data for January.

Analysts expect an acceleration in the headline rate of year-on-year inflation from 2.3% for December to 2.5%, although at the core level prices are seen dipping from 2.3% to 2.2%.

Later in the session, at 1500 GMT, the Senate Banking Committee will hold hearings on the nomination of Judy Shelton and Christoper Waller to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Against that backdrop, the Prime Minister is expected to announce a reshuffle of his cabinet with five ministers expected to be replaced.

Across the Channel meanwhile, a final reading on euro area gross domestic product in the fourth quarter bears watching, as does Eurozone international trade data for December.

Both reports are scheduled for release at 1000 GMT.

Barclays will centre investors' attention in the corporate space on Thursday, with analysts at UBS anticipating that the lender will post profits before tax and notable litigation and conduct costs of £1.21bn or 110% more than for the comparable year ago period.

The lender's tangible net asset value meanwhile was pegged at 273.0p per share and the common equity tier 1 capital ratio at 13.8%, with the latter six tenths of a percentage point higher than at the end of 2018.

Shareholders should expect the dividend per share to be hiked to 6.0p, for a 50.0% increase on a year ago.
