Tuesday preview: China trade data and Boohoo in focus

The focus on Tuesday will shift towards Asia, where China's customs administration is set to release foreign trade data for December.

Consensus is calling for a pick up in both export and import growth, from a -1.3% year-on-year pace to 2.5% and from 0.5% to 9.6%, respectively.

However, Beijing's trade surplus with the rest of the global is expected to jump from $37.93bn to $45.70bn.

Stateside meanwhile, at 1330 GMT the Department of Labor is due to publish a report on consumer prices, also referencing the month of December.

The figures are expected to reveal an acceleration in headline CPI from 2.1% for November to 2.3% in December, although at the core level, CPI is expected to be steady at 2.3%.

Fedspeak will continue to be in focus, with New York Fed chief, John Williams, due to deliver a speech at 0900 GMT, followed by another from his peer at the Kansas City Fed at 1100 GMT.

On the corporate side of things, fashion retailer Boohoo is set to update investors on Tuesday on trading conditions during its third quarter.

Strong sales growth saw the company post a 83% jump in profits in the first half of its financial year to reach £45.2m, driven by growth across all its brands.

For the present period, the purchase of the online operations of rivals Karen Millar and Coast, in August of the previous year, likely boosted its topline over the latest four-month stretch and would do so over the remainder of the year, said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.

At the time of its last update, on 3 December, the group said that it was continuing to trade "comfortably" in line with analysts' expectations.

Investors will also be keeping an eye on the US as the first quarter earnings season gets underway with results from financial heavyweights Citi and JP Morgan.
