According to company sources that spoke to the media outlet, it is unclear whether the company wants to manufacture the battery cells on its own or in partnership with other firms.
Daimler has been suffering delays from its current provider Chinese battery supplier Farasis Energy which is building a factory in Germany.
The German carmaker struck a deal with Farasis Energy in 2019 for the supply of lithium-ion battery cells.
Delays to the construction of the factory and issues with samples for the cells prompted Daimler Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius to shift towards independent production of battery cells, Business Insider reported.
