Elon Musk hints at Tesla entry into India in 2021

Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk said on Friday via Twitter that the electric carmaker would enter the Indian market in 2021 “for sure”.

He was replying to a tweet from a Twitter handle called Tesla India Club, which told the CEO, "Hey Elon , just thought we'd put this out here. We wait and hang on to hope wrt "hopefully soon" for India Tesla entry. Would love to hear of any progress in this regard."

The original post also attached a photograph of a T-shirt with the message: “India wants Tesla”.

“Next year for sure,” Musk replied. “Thanks for waiting.”

It is unclear whether Tesla will in fact enter the Indian market in 2021 as Musk is well known for getting into trouble for tweeting company news without consulting with the rest of the board.

It is not the first time that Musk comments on Tesla’s interest in India. Musk commented last year about entering India, in response to someone on Twitter who asked “What about India sir?”.

His answer in March 2019 was “Would love to be there this year. If not, definitely next!”
