The appointment of Coleman, the current co-head of Goldman's Global Financing Group, will mark the first boardroom shakeup since chief executive David Solomon took over the top job in October 2018.
"Denis has consistently proven himself through his strong judgment and operational capability across roles of increasing responsibility and we look forward to his contributions to the firm as Chief Financial Officer," said Solomon.
Coleman joined Goldman in 1996 as an analyst in its bank loan unit, later taking over as co-head of US loan capital markets and then co-head of US leveraged finance and other management roles in the firm's EMEA financing arm.
As of 1600 BST, Goldman Sachs shares were down 0.91% at $405.57 each.
