German carrier Lufthansa Group has left thousands of passengers battling with delays and flight cancellations on Wednesday following a breakdown in its IT system.
Lufthansa's computer systems for boarding were said to no longer be operational, with the group assuring customers that it was already working on a solution.
All domestic flights were cancelled and passengers were asked to switch to trains as a crisis team convened at Lufthansa's headquarters at Frankfurt Airport.
Air traffic control has closed Frankfurt to landings to prevent the hub from filling up with aircraft, with flights being diverted to Nuremberg, Cologne and Düsseldorf. Take-offs from Frankfurt were also cancelled.
According to Lufthansa, the issue occurred as a result of construction work on a rail line in Frankfurt. Several Deutsche Telekom fiber optic cables were also said to have been cut by an excavator.
"Currently, Lufthansa Group airlines are affected by an IT outage," it said. "This results in flight delays and cancellations. We regret the inconvenience this is causing our passengers."
As of 1140 GMT, Lufthansa shares were down 1.25% at €9.52 each.
