Responding to recent press speculation, State Street said late on Thursday that it was "not pursuing an acquisition of, or any other business combination with, Credit Suisse".
"There is no basis to the continuing market rumours. Although we have a longstanding company policy of not commenting on such speculation, we feel a response to these reports is now warranted in this instance."
The statement came after Swiss blog Inside Paradeplat reported that the US bank was lining up an offer for the Swiss lender, briefly sending shares in Credit Suisse higher.
On Thursday, the chief executive of Credit Suisse dismissed rumours of a possible takeover approach as "really stupid".
Asked about the rumour at the Goldman Sachs European Financial Conference in Rome, Thomas Gottstein said: "We never comment on rumours. And my father once gave me a piece of advice: for really stupid questions, you’d rather not comment at all.
"So I think I will listen to my father’s advice on this one."
