The ID vehicle will have a range of 373 miles from a single charge, Volkswagen revealed at a motor show in Paris.
The move marks Volkswagen's efforts to embark on cleaner energy vehicles in the wake of its emissions cheating scandal, when it was found to have installed software to disguise emission levels during testing.
The company hopes to sell 1m electric vehicles by 2025, and the ID is its first assault on the long-distance electric car market.
Electric vehicles are currently on the market but are not providing serious competition to petrol and diesel engines, with weak battery power the main issue.
Carmakers are now focusing on building vehicles with a range of at least 200 miles per charge. General Motors and Tesla are leading the way in this regard.
In a note provided on Volkswagen's press release, it also mentioned the ability of the car to receive parcels via a new delivery service when its owner isn't home.
