Over the preceding two weeks, scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory reached that milestone by bombarding a pellet of hydrogen plasma with the largest laser in the world, people said according to the Financial Times.
Data from the experiment was still being analysed to certify the achievement before it could be announced, an event that was now expected on Tuesday.
The better than hoped for result however resulted in damage to some of the diagnostic equipment, making that determination more difficult, the people added.
In the 12 months to June, companies focused on nuclear fusion research attracted $2.83bn of funding, the FT reported.
