Communist paper urges China to join TPP
A popular Communist Party newspaper has called on China to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), saying the agreement's aims are aligned with the country's own.
However, it said it would also need to carefully examine what impact entering the partnership would have on its state-owned industries.
"The rules of the TPP and the direction of China's reforms and opening up are in line," the newspaper was quoted as saying by Reuters.
"China should keep paying close attention and at an appropriate time, in accordance with progress on domestic reform, join the TPP, while limiting the costs associated to the greatest degree."
The country's trade minister has said China does not feel targeted by the TPP, but would carefully consider its potential impact.
