French economy could suffer €2bn hit from Paris terror attacks
The 13 November terrorist attacks in Paris could cost the country around €2bn.
Le Figaro said on Wednesday that radio station RTL has seen a note from the French Treasury looking to estimate the cost of the attack on the French economy.
The note suggested the events and the wave of fear that ensued could cost the country €2bn or around 0.1 percentage point of gross domestic product.
Le Figaro contacted economy minister Emmanuel Macron, who insisted on the need to refine the figures.
“This is only a first estimate. It’s very hard to define the indicators to measure the impact of this type of extraordinary event. Therefore we don’t comment on the €2bn figure, we will produce more accurate figures in a few weeks,” Macron said.
Le Figaro pointed out that in the days following the attacks, the tourism and hotel business suffered the fallout from the widespread fear that gripped the capital, just as they were beginning to recover from the Charlie Hebdo attacks in January.
