Trump Jr was informed of Russian attempts to help campaign - report
Donald Trump Jr was reportedly informed that his meeting with a Russian lawyer was part of a Kremlin attempt to support his father’s presidential campaign.
The New York Times reported on Monday that Trump Jr received an email which informed him of the Russian intent to support the Trump campaign, following the emergence last weekend of his meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya.
US President Donald Trump has seen the early months of his presidency ravaged by constant speculation about collusion between members of his campaign team and the Russian government.
The email in question which was sent by intermediary Rob Goldstone, a former British tabloid reporter, indicates that the Kremlin was the source of potentially damaging information.
Trump Jr admitted to attending the meeting, but that the lawyer had provided ‘no meaningful information’ on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
The President’s son took to Twitter on Monday to defend his actions.
He tweeted: "Obviously I'm the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent... went nowhere but had to listen."
