US open: Dow Jones trades slightly higher ahead of Q3 bank earnings

As of 1510 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.03% at 29,306.24, while the S&P 500 was 0.40% weaker at 3,625.23 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.81% softer at 10,566.08.

The Dow opened 9.45 points lower on Monday, doing little to reclaim heavy losses recorded at the tail end of last week as September's non-farm payrolls left investors thinking that the Federal Reserve will likely hike short-term interest rates by another 75 basis points at its next meeting.

Monday marks the beginning of what will likely be a rollercoaster week for major indices, with four of the world's largest banks reporting earnings throughout the week and a fresh monthly consumer price index reading coming on Thursday. Strong earnings are likely to be the only thing that could relieve equity investors' central bank-fuelled pains.

While no major data points were due out on Monday, investors will await speeches from the Federal Reserve's Charles Evans and Lael Brainard throughout the course of the day.

No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Monday.

Bond markets will be closed in observance of Columbus Day.
