John Lewis reports 2.3% increase in sales for Christmas week
John Lewis posted a 2.3% increase in sales to £129.2m in the week of Christmas as shoppers made last minute purchases.
Sales in the week to 26 December were driven by the retailer’s website which saw 25.1% growth. The group also achieved a record volume of customers visiting its mobile app.
Popular items included gaming and wearable technology in the tablets and computing category which had a 21% increase in sales.
Jewellery and watches were also strong performers with 23.3% growth in sales while beauty counters saw a 24.1% rise in sales.
Gifts for children were top sellers with sales of toys and books up 24.1%.
Other items with robust sales included headphones, cameras and fashion.
“This was a busy week for us,” said Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis.
“Customers were shopping right until the last moment before Christmas, helped by the extension of our Click & Collect service to Christmas Eve.”
