The FTSE 250 stone and concrete paving and landscaping supplier said the appointment followed the announcement in October that Andrew Allner would be stepping down as chairman, and would also retire as a non-executive director during 2018.
“We are delighted that Vanda has accepted the invitation to join Marshalls, as chair of the board and as a non-executive director,” said chief executive Martyn Coffey.
“Vanda brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of leadership, and will be a valuable addition to the board.
“I would also like to record our thanks to Andrew, who has provided clear and consistent leadership, both as chair of [the] remuneration committee and subsequently as chairman of the board, over the past 15 years.”
Murray’s appointment as non-executive director would take effect following the close of the company’s annual general meeting on 9 May, at which time she would also replace Allner as chair.
“I am very pleased to be joining Marshalls - a company that is a market-leader with a great performance record, recognised for its brand values, quality, service and innovation,” said Vanda Murray.
“I look forward to working with my board colleagues at this exciting time for the business and continuing to pursue Marshalls' successful growth strategy.”
