Monsoon named and shamed over minimum wage
Privately-owned UK retailer Monsoon Accessorize has been named by the government as one of the companies failing to pay some of its workers the national minimum wage.
Between them, the 115 companies on the government’s list failed to pay more than £389,0000 to workers.
Monsoon topped the list as it neglected to pay £104,508 to 1,438 members of staff.
Business minister Nick Boles said: “Employers that fail to pay the minimum wage hurt the living standards of the lowest paid and their families.
“As a one nation government on the side of working people we are determined that everyone who is entitled to the National Minimum Wage receives it.
Next April we will introduce a new National Living Wage which will mean a £900-a-year pay rise for someone working full time on the minimum wage and we will enforce this equally robustly.”
The name and shame scheme, under which employers are checked out by HMRC, was implemented in October 2013.
The minimum wage is currently £6.70 per hour for those over 21 and £5.30 for 18 to 20 year olds.
