The FTSE 250 fashion retailer said Rubin was currently chairman of Pentland Brands, a director of Pentland Group and the European Vice-President of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry.
It said he brought experience of brand development outside of Europe, which would be of use in supporting the global expansion of JD Sports.
"I am pleased to announce that Andy has agreed to join the board," said JD Sports executive chairman Peter Cowgill.
"His experience of managing and developing brands internationally will add to our board, as we continue the international expansion of the JD brand," he added.
Pentland Group owned a 57.47% stake in JD Sports Fashion, the board confirmed.
