According to Sky News, Mastercard acknowledged “some payment transaction issues” at certain shops, but clarified there was no evidence linking the problems to its network.
Visa, while confirming their systems were “operating normally”, said they were investigating the complaints.
Sainsbury's confirmed a temporary outage in contactless payments due to an issue with its third-party provider, but assured that services had been restored.
Similar issues were reported at Asda, which also confirmed its systems were now back online after resolving temporary issues with Visa.
