Lindsey Pownall, who will join the board from 1 April and will be part of the corporate responsibility committee, retired in December as chief executive of Samworth Brothers, a supplier of premium quality chilled and ambient foods.
Pownall, who was at Samworth's for two decades, brings significant experience in food, grocery and retail brand development, as well as a wealth of experience in supply leadership and strategic development.
Tesco chairman John Allan expressed the customary delight at welcoming the new addition.
"She brings a wealth of relevant experience, and complements the existing skills and experience on the board," he said. "She will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the board."
Samworth, whose brands include Ginsters, Dickinson & Morris pork pies, Walkers pork pies and Walkers sausages, produces sandwiches, ready meals, pork pies, desserts and cakes for supermarkets including Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Waitrose as well as Tesco.
