FTSE 250 movers: Commodity stocks drop, but Afren jumps after update

Afren's share price rebounded strongly on Tuesday, with investors impressed by the news that the Africa-focused oil explorer has found oil after completing drilling and coring operations on Block 1101 onshore Madagascar. Even including Tuesday's near-10% rise, so far this year the stock has still fallen by 79% on the back of the recent collapse in the oil price.

Other stocks in the oil and gas sector were putting in a mixed performance, with Ophir Energy rising strongly and Nostrum Oil & Gas and Enquest trading with heavy losses. Crude prices were extending losses with Brent down 3.3%, close to $59 a barrel, the first time it has dropped below $60 since mid-2009.

Weaker commodity prices were also hitting shares in the mining sectors, with Centamin down as gold prices declined, Evraz tracking iron ore prices lower, and Vedanta affected by a drop in a number of metals it mines such as copper, lead and aluminium.

Metal prices weakened after data showed that factory output in top metals consumer China contracted more than expected this month. The HSBC purchasing managers' index for Chinese manufacturing weakened to a seven-month low.
