Friday preview: G20 leaders' summit, US data in the spotlight

"The trade war continues to be the crucial near-term question for jittery markets worried about the implications of the upcoming G20 meetings for the US-China trade war," said strategists at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch.

US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, are not due to talk trade until Saturday, but financial markets will be closely watching for any remarks, hints or statements from either and their respective trade negotiation teams.

Against that backdrop, overnight consultancy GfK will publish the results of its UK consumer confidence survey for June, followed at 0930 BST by revised first quarter gross domestic product data from the Office for National Statistics.

Also due out at 0930 are figures on Britain's current account deficit over the first three months of 2019.

Stateside meanwhile, readings are scheduled on personal income and spending for May, alongside the Chicago Purchasing managers' Index covering the month of June and the final print for the University of Michigan's monthly consumer sentiment gauge.

Across the Channel, the focus will be on the final reading for euro area consumer prices in June, which is due out at 1000 BST.
