UK media names Westminster attacker as Salih Khater
The suspect arrested after Tuesday's Westminster car attack that injured three people has been named as Salih Khater, UK media reported, citing unnamed sources.
The 29-year-old was reportedly a British citizen of Sudanese origin. He remained in police custody after his arrest on suspicion of preparing an act of terror. On Wednesday police said he had been further arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police have been searching three addresses in Birmingham and Nottingham as part of their investigation. Three people were injured after the silver Ford Fiesta hit cyclists and pedestrians during Tuesday morning's rush hour.
The car then crashed into security barriers outside the Lords entrance to the Houses of Parliament just before 07:40 BST.
He did not co-operate with officers after his arrest, Scotland Yard said.
A spokesman for Coventry University confirmed Khater had studied accountancy there from September 2017 to May this year, the Guardian reported.
“Salih Khater studied accountancy at Coventry University between September 2017 and May 2018. As of May 2018 he is no longer enrolled at the university.”
The car travelled to London from Birmingham on Monday night and spent the time between around 1.25am and 5.55am in the Tottenham Court Road area in central London, before moving to Westminster and Whitehall at about 6am. It remained there before the incident an hour and 40 minutes later, police said.
