Cook later went on to congratulate software developers on their success, tweeting that they had earned over $50bn since the App Store's launch in 2008.

Reports have suggested that a major reason for the record-breaking month has been the emergence of augmented reality smartphone game Pokemon Go, which broke the record for the most downloads within the first week of release.
The game is said to be generating $10m per day for Apple and Android.
