US close: Major indices deliver losing week

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.45% at 30,822,42, while the S&P 500 was 0.72% weaker at 3,873.33 and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.90% softer at 11,448.40.

The Dow closed 139.40 points lower on Friday, extending losses recorded in the previous session as market participants digested a number of key data points.

FedEx shares slumped on Friday, with the stock heading south after the shipping giant withdrew full-year guidance and said it had been forced to implement cost-cutting initiatives in order to combat soft global shipment volumes amid "significantly" worsening macroeconomic trends.

On the macro front, a preliminary reading of the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index rose to a five-month high of 59.5 in September, up from 58.2 in August but short of forecasts for a reading of 60.

No major earnings were slated for release on Friday.
