The problem was thought to be affecting more than a hundred stores and thousands of customers, many of whom were quick to vent their frustrations on Twitter.
A spokesman for Tesco said: "We’re currently experiencing an IT issue which is affecting some grocery home shopping orders. We’re working hard to fix this problem and apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause.”
He added that less than 10% of grocery home shopping orders have been affected.
Disgruntled customers were being offered a £10 ecoupon for the inconvenience.
At 1110 BST, Tesco shares were down 0.2% to 170.75p.
@Tesco With all due respect, a £10 evoucher isn't going to feed my family today, is it? Cancelling 1:15 before it's due? Shocking service. pic.twitter.com/LQ8oCY2Stu

@Tesco can you tell me why my home delivery is not taking place today? Had a call from your Sudbury branch from a picker #letdown

@Tesco text me a few minutes before the END of my delivery slot to say it's been cancelled and to reorder. #poorservice #appalling.
