The FTSE 250 company said Clerkin would start with the company on 1 May next year, and would replace Alan Ralph from that date.
Ralph would support the transition until his previously announced retirement in November.
UDG’s board said Clerkin most recently held the position of chief financial officer with ConvaTec Group - a London Stock Exchange-listed company - where he worked for the last three years.
ConvaTec is a global medical products and technologies company, employing approximately 9,000 people worldwide.
Prior to that, Clerkin held roles in Elan Corporation - most recently as executive vice president and chief financial officer, culminating in its sale to Perrigo Company in 2013.
He started his career as an auditor with KPMG and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
As chief financial officer, the board said the finance and the investor relations functions of UDG Healthcare would report to Clerkin.
He would also be appointed a director of the company in May 2018.
“We are delighted to welcome Nigel to UDG Healthcare,” said UDG’s chief executive officer Brendan McAtamney.
“Nigel brings with him significant industry experience and an excellent track record of leading finance functions in the international healthcare sector.”
McAtamney said that, as the board focussed on its strategy, capitalising on the increasing trend within healthcare to outsource non-core and specialist activities, Clerkin’s appointment reinforced its commitment to attracting talent with relevant sectoral and operational experience that would help it to implement that strategy.
“Together with the board and the wider executive team, I am very much looking forward to working with Nigel.”
