Democrats move closer to impeaching Trump
US Democrats have stepped up moves to impeach Donald Trump, publishing a resolution due to be filed with the House of Representatives.
According to CNN and the BBC, the resolution – which has been drafted by three Democrat lawmakers – accuses the president of "incitement to insurrection".
Seeking to impeach him for "high crimes and misdemeanours", the resolution cites Trump’s unsubstantiated claims he won the presidential election; his controversial speech at a rally in Washington last week; and a phone call made by the president to Georgia’s secretary of state, during which he urged the fellow Republican to "find" more votes.
The four-page resolution, published by CNN, concludes: "In all this, President Trump gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions of Government. He threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperilled a coequal branch of government.
"He thereby betrayed his trust as president to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.
"Donald John Trump thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honour, trust or profit under the United States."
The resolution is expected to be filed around 1600 GMT on Monday, CNN and the BBC reported.
At the weekend, Democrat speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote to colleagues, saying that the party would first call on vice president Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, and would expect him to respond within 24 hours", according to The New York Times.
Should that fail, the House would then seek to bring an impeachment case to the floor, the newspaper added, which would charge Trump with high crimes and misdemeanour.
President-elect Joe Biden will be inaugurated on 20 January.
